Why visit here?
Visit Wuhou Temple, the heart of the Three Kingdoms. Admire the statues of Zhuge Liang and the Shu heroes among cypress trees and centuries-old red walls.
The Wuhou Temple, located in southern Chengdu, is China's most important museum dedicated to the Three Kingdoms and the place of worship for Zhuge Liang, the most revered strategist in Chinese history. Founded in 223 AD, this 15,000-square-meter architectural complex is the only temple in the country that commemorates both a sovereign (Liu Bei) and his subject (Zhuge Liang).
The tour begins in the majestic Shu Kings Pavilion, where a golden statue of Liu Bei presides over the main hall. Behind the altar, the hill contains his tomb, surrounded by centuries-old cypress trees. Next, the Zhuge Liang Pavilion houses a statue of the strategist with his characteristic feather fan, flanked by his son and grandson, who died defending the kingdom.
The Wall of Generals, on either side of the central courtyard, displays 28 terracotta statues of Shu's main heroes, including the legendary Guan Yu and Zhang Fei. Their faces express the loyalty and courage that inspired the famous novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. In the gardens, the Tablet of the Three Elders, with calligraphy by Liu Gongquan, recounts the virtues of these characters.
The intense red color of its walls, a symbol of loyalty, envelops the site in an atmosphere of epic and spirituality. Strolling along its paths among orange trees and lotus ponds allows visitors to connect with the legend of a man who, before dying, wrote: “Give your best until your last breath!”
