The Qiaoxi Historic District, located on the western bank of Gongchen Bridge, is the only site in Hangzhou listed as a World Heritage Site of the Grand Canal since 2014. Its name, which means “West of the Bridge,” covers an area of 7.83 hectares where the essence of life along the water at the end of the Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China is preserved.

The district's structure is centered around “one bridge, two streets, two temples, four alleys, and five museums.” The Gongchen Bridge, with almost 400 years of history, is the great icon. Residential alleys such as Jixiangsi and Tonghe preserve the urban memory, while the Zhang Daxian and Caishen temples treasure popular legends.

The former industrial complex of the Hangzhou No. 1 Textile Factory has been transformed into a unique museum complex. The House of Five Museums, which includes the Knife, Scissors, and Sword Museum; the Fan Museum; the Umbrella Museum; the Handicraft Museum; and the Living Handicraft Pavilion, allows visitors to observe and participate in the creation of handicrafts.

With more than 300 families still residing in their century-old homes, Qiaoxi is a lively neighborhood where tradition and modernity coexist in harmony. Strolling through its cobbled streets, enjoying a cup of tea in a traditional house, or contemplating the Gongchen Bridge at sunset is a unique experience that connects you with the most authentic Hangzhou.

Pros & Cons

  • Features the iconic Gongchen Bridge, the tallest and longest stone arch bridge among Hangzhou's ancient bridges.
  • Free to enter, open 24/7. You can easily spend 1.5–3 hours strolling the 800-meter canal-side street, popping into craft workshops, small temples, bookstores, and riverside cafes.
  • While the district itself is free, the five museums close on Mondays and operate limited hours (typically 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM, last entry at 4:00 PM).
  • If you're on a tight schedule, prioritize the China Fan Museum and the Handicraft Live Demonstration Hall.
