Why visit here?
Visit Nanluoguxiang, the soul of old Beijing. Stroll through centuries-old hutongs, discover the princess's courtyard, and savor authentic local culture.
Nanluoguxiang is the most emblematic street in Beijing's old town and the best-preserved hutong in the city. With more than 700 years of history, this 800-meter-long street has witnessed the passage of time from the Yuan dynasty to the present day, maintaining the original urban structure of the capital.
Its herringbone layout, with eight hutongs on each side, is home to former residences of princes and mandarins. The most famous is the Princess Courtyard, where the daughter of the last emperor lived, which today has been converted into a charming cultural space with a café and designer shops.
Strolling through Nanluoguxiang is like immersing yourself in traditional Beijing life. Its century-old craft shops, grandmother's cookie workshops, and dried fruit stalls coexist with modern boutiques, art galleries, and cozy bars that attract the city's creative youth.
At dusk, red lanterns light up, reflecting off the gray walls of the houses. The aroma of freshly brewed tea and the sound of conversations on the terraces create a unique atmosphere where old Beijing and modernity blend in perfect harmony.
Pros & Cons
- Nanluoguxiang is one of Beijing's oldest neighborhoods, built during the Yuan Dynasty (1267). It's the only place in China where the original "checkerboard" layout of ancient hutongs and courtyards has been preserved.
- The entire 787-meter-long main lane and its 16 surrounding alleyways are open to the public with no admission fee. You can spend hours wandering and discovering without spending a yuan on entry.
- Branch off into the 16 side alleys (such as Yuer Hutong, Mao'er Hutong) to see authentic residential life. Unlike the bustling main street, these quiet lanes offer a genuine glimpse into old Beijing courtyard homes and local daily life.
- The street is lined with shops selling traditional crafts (calligraphy, paper-cuts, Beijing Opera masks) and famous snacks. You can sample Jianbing (savory pancakes), Tanghulu (candied fruit), Wenyu Cheese (a local specialty), and the famous Zhajiangmian (noodles with fried sauce).
- Extremely crowded on weekends and holidays
- Limited accessibility for wheelchairs or strollers
- You won't get good photos on the main street at midday due to the crowds. For beautiful, empty shots, come before 9:00 AM or stick to the side alleys (Yuer, Mao'er, etc.) where you can capture the classic red doors, grey brick walls, and morning light.
