Why visit here?
Visit the world's only “edible” museum. Cook with masters, taste authentic mapo tofu, and discover the secrets of Sichuan spice.
The Chengdu Sichuan Cuisine Museum, located in the Pidu district, is the only themed museum in the world dedicated to a culinary culture. Opened in 2007 and designated a National Level 2 Museum in 2024, this vibrant 40-hectare space combines traditional Sichuan architecture, classical gardens, and an innovative philosophy: “a museum you can eat.”
The museum offers a unique multisensory experience. The Collection Hall displays more than 6,000 pieces that narrate 3,000 years of gastronomic history, from the Zhou dynasty to the Republic of China. The Pixian bean paste production area, declared “the soul of Sichuan cuisine", showcases the artisanal process of three centuries of tradition.
The Interactive Demonstration Room allows visitors to become chefs for a day. Guided by local masters, they can learn how to prepare iconic dishes such as Mapo Tofu or Kong Pao Chicken. The Temple of the Kitchen God, the largest in the country, represents the spiritual heart of Sichuan's culinary traditions.
To complete the cultural immersion, the Old Street recreates the atmosphere of a traditional shopping street, while the Tea Garden offers a space to enjoy the iconic tea culture and mahjong game. With 20 traditional snacks available for free tasting, the museum guarantees an experience that awakens all the senses.
Pros & Cons
- World's first "edible museum" dedicated entirely to Sichuan cuisine – a living museum where you can see, smell, taste, and cook, not just look at relics.
- Unlimited Sichuan snack buffet included with general admission.
- Hands-on cooking experience in a real kitchen.
- The Douban drying yard with hundreds of giant clay jars is one of Chengdu's most unique and striking photo spots, completely different from any other museum.
- Cooking classes require an upgraded ticket, not included in the standard admission.
- The snack street runs from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM only
- The interactive area involves handling ingredients and cooking. Avoid wearing light-colored or expensive clothes that could get stained.
