Houhai Lake, together with Shichahai and Qianhai, forms the aquatic heart of ancient Beijing. Surrounded by centuries-old hutongs, weeping willows, and stately residences, this place has witnessed more than 700 years of history since the Yuan dynasty.

Boating is the most characteristic experience. Small rowboats glide across the water while travelers admire the facades of traditional houses and the stone bridges connecting both banks. At sunset, lanterns reflect on the water, creating a magical atmosphere.

Its shores are home to a surprising mix of tradition and modernity. Ancient princely residences coexist with trendy bars and terraces where musicians play jazz until midnight. Yandai Xiejie Street, with its craft shops and century-old pipes, connects the lake with the hustle and bustle of the city.

In winter, the frozen surface becomes Beijing's largest skating rink. Entire families flock here on weekends to glide across the ice on sleds and specially adapted bicycles, a tradition that Beijingers have kept alive for generations.

Pros & Cons

  • A 700-year-old historic lake district in central Beijing, free to enter and open 24/7. Often called "the heart of old Beijing," it is the only well-preserved historic area inside the city proper.
  • Ride a traditional rickshaw through the hutongs – these narrow alleyways surrounding the lake are home to original courtyard residences (siheyuan). Many rickshaw drivers also serve as informal guides, telling stories of the area's history.
  • The Houhai Bar Street is the nightlife heart of old Beijing
  • Rich cultural and architectural heritage – walk past Prince Gong's Mansion (former residence of a powerful Qing statesman), the Former Residence of Soong Ching-ling (a key 20th-century political figure), and Drum Tower, one of the few surviving Ming-era bell-and-drum towers in China.
  • The area is extremely crowded on weekends, public holidays, and summer evenings.
  • Best photo times: early morning (7:00–8:30 AM) for mist on the lake, or the "blue hour" just after sunset (around 6:30–7:30 PM) when buildings light up. Yinding Bridge offers the most iconic shot of both the lake and Drum Tower.
