The Temple of Confucius in Beijing, built in 1302 during the Yuan dynasty, is the second largest Confucian temple in China, after the one in Qufu. This architectural complex, covering more than 20,000 square meters, was where the emperors of the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties performed the highest sacrifices in honor of the sage.

The main courtyard houses the impressive Forest of Steles, where 198 stone tablets record the names of the jinshi doctors, the highest graduates of the imperial examinations during the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. Each inscription is a testament to the dream of millions of scholars who aspired to serve the empire.

Three centuries-old cypress trees guard the grounds with their legends. The most famous, known as the Leaning Cypress, according to tradition bent its branches every time a corrupt official passed by, refusing to give him shade. This tree, planted during the Yuan dynasty, remains a symbol of Confucian righteousness.

The Great Hall of Perfection, with its yellow-tiled eaves, houses the statue of Confucius flanked by his main disciples. Its altars preserve bronze ritual vessels, jade bells, and tablets inscribed with emperors' writings. Adjacent to the temple, the Guozijian Academy, the imperial university, completes this sanctuary of learning where the master's philosophy continues to resonate after seven centuries.
